Biography

Ramatu Umahaba, PhD, is a distinguished scholar and researcher in Science Education, specializing in Chemistry Education. With a PhD from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, her career is defined by a commitment to advancing innovative teaching methodologies, fostering critical thinking, and addressing challenges in science education. She has established herself as a leading figure in Nigerian science education, contributing significantly to improving teaching and learning practices in chemistry. Her academic journey began with a Bachelor of Technology in Chemistry Education from the Federal University of Technology, Minna, where she developed a strong foundation in integrating theoretical knowledge with practical applications. She pursued her Master’s degree in Chemistry Education at Ahmadu Bello University, focusing on the impact of innovative teaching models on student outcomes. Her doctoral research further explored metacognitive strategies to enhance academic performance and retention in organic chemistry, culminating in a dissertation that has influenced teaching practices in Nigerian classrooms. Umahaba’s research interests include metacognition, critical thinking, and entrepreneurship in chemistry education. Her work on metacognitive strategies, such as Think-Pair-Share and guided inquiry, has demonstrated their effectiveness in improving students' cognitive awareness, confidence, and academic performance. One of her notable studies revealed how metacognitive tools enhance learning outcomes in organic chemistry, leading to widespread adoption of these strategies in classrooms. She has also championed the integration of the 5Es Learning Model—engage, explore, explain, elaborate, and evaluate, into chemistry teaching, providing educators with a robust framework for tackling complex topics such as stoichiometry and chemical periodicity.

Effects of Artificial Intelligence Enriched Inquiry-Based Strategy on Performance in Chemistry among Secondary School Students in Zaria Metropolis, Kaduna, Nigeria

This study investigated the effects of ChatGPT enriched inquiry-based strategy (IBS+ChatGPT) on secondary school students’ performance in Chemistry. A quasi-experimental pretest–posttest group design was adapted. A sample of 103 (63 in experimental and 40 in control groups) secondary students were randomly selected from a population of 7,116 studen...
